When Brian Banks smiled and shook my hand the first time we met, I was a bit dazzled. I’ve been lucky to meet lots of people, famous and infamous, but he is one of the few who radiated confidence and joy, something I didn’t expect from a man who’d had a decade of his life stolen by one woman’s lie. I couldn’t help but think of the things I fret about, and when I compare any of it to Brian, I look ridiculous. As I told people in the newsroom, if you’re not rooting for him after you see this story, you’re like the Tin Man, in need a real heart. With gratitude to photographer Jon Samuels, who made this story sing.
